Is it too cold to walk your dog?
A daily dose of exercise is good for everyone, but the cold weather can make it harder to want to venture outdoors. The same is true for our canine companions and can even put them at risk of dangers, including frostbite or hypothermia.
How cold is too cold for your dog?
Different dogs have different levels of tolerance to low temperatures. Seniors and puppies may be more sensitive to the cold as their bodies cannot regulate temperatures well.
Healthy, medium or large dogs with thick coats can do longer walks in icy conditions, whereas it’s recommended to limit the time in the cold for smaller dogs or dogs with thin coats to 15-20 minutes.
The best way to tell how cold is too cold is to let your dog tell you themselves. It might be a good idea to observe signs such as:
-
Trying to find warm spaces for a snuggle
-
Shivering
-
Tucking their tail in between their legs or standing in a hunched position
-
Not wanting to continue their walk or unwilling to go out.
Pets with arthritis can experience increased discomfort on cold days. If you notice your pet being slower to rise in the mornings, stiff after a nap or a little less likely to jump up, it might be time to visit your vet to ask about how to keep their older joints more comfortable. Tips for walking your dog in winter:
🧥 Keep them warm
While some dogs have thick coats to keep them naturally snug, many dogs with short coats or low body fat can benefit from a comfortable winter coat to keep them warm and protect them from windchills.
🐾 Protect their paws
In extreme conditions, you can use wax or a balm to protect your dog’s paws. “Dog booties” are also a good way to ensure that nothing sticks to their paws during walks and keeps them warm. Some dogs might hate it or need some time getting used to their new booties.
🩺 Get advice from your vet
Since every dog’s personality and body is different, your vet might be best able to guide you about keeping your dog safe and comfortable on cold days.
