How to cat proof your home

You’re familiar with the phrase about curiosity and the cat! Well, here are our top tips for keeping your kitty and other prized possessions out of harm.

• Beware of common items around the home and garden that are poisonous to cats. Check out these common cat poisons, human foods to avoid and toxic plants.
• Keep medicines, cleaning products and any other hazardous or toxic items (such as antifreeze, snail/insect/rodent bait) well out of reach. A child-proof latch on a cupboard is handy for persistent kitties.
• Pack away the Ming vase collection and any other ornaments you don’t want broken. Cats are intrepid explorers and may accidentally knock over or break fragile items.
• Be mindful of electrical cords and also curtain cords, as both can be hazardous to a curious kitty.
• Always check the clothes dryer! Cats tend to be drawn to the warmth of dryers, and can also find their way into fridges, freezers and dresser drawers.
• Resolve the toilet seat debate once and for all - keep toilet seats down and close the lid. A kitten could fall in and be unable to get out.
• Make sure your screen door shuts properly and has a secure latch. Don’t run the risk that your cat could slip out unnoticed. Check your window screens are secure and sturdy.
