United States Neapolitan Mastiff Rescue Program

Interested In Fostering A Neapolitan Mastiff?

Foster homes for Neapolitan Mastiffs are temporary homes. When we have a Neapolitan Mastiff who has entered the Rescue network, we often need a temporary home for the dog until we can find a prospective adoptive home and qualify the new family as suitable. "Foster families" have a very tough job, but a very gratifying one and most of all, a critical one.

What Foster Families Do

Foster families have to be willing and able to do such things as take a Neapolitan mastiff into their homes for, hopefully, brief periods of time and work with the Neapolitan Mastiff to evaluate its temperament and health.

Foster families should be able to work with a dog, evaluating its temperament, its suitability with children, and what the dog is like. Sometimes foster people take the dogs to obedience training, seeing how it reacts to others and new situations.

Those willing to foster Neapolitan mastiffs are really on the front-line of the rescue work. They must be able to say when a dog is not suitable for rescue. (And they must be able to give a foster-dog up to its new home!)
Rescue can reimburse some expenses for the dogs, but we do not have an open ticket for any dog, so foster homes will be asked to pay for the standard upkeep for the foster Neapolitan Mastiff....food, water, etc. If the dog needs surgery or extensive vet care, the rescue committee must approve any expense before it is incurred.

When the time comes for the dog to be adopted, the foster family will need to meet with prospective adoptive families and work with them to ensure they understand the needs of the dog and their commitment to it.
