Finding Bella and Luna Their Paw-fect New Home
Deciding to rehome a pet is heartbreaking, and this decision is never taken lightly. PetRescue’s Home2Home program provides a non-judgmental and supportive option for pet owners during this time of need. There are so many reasons that folks may need to rehome their pet. This ranges from experiencing financial hardship, needing to relocate (often because of the rental crisis the country is experiencing), illness, homelessness, family violence, separations, or the pet not getting along with another pet. In many instances, the Home2Home team has offered support and advice, which has helped owners keep their pets. For those who make the informed decision to rehome their pet, our team provides personalised, non-judgmental support during every step of the process.
Home2Home has assisted with finding homes for over 200 pets since the program began in 2021. Two of these pets are gorgeous bonded pair Bella and Luna. Bonded pairs have a special connection and can’t be separated. There are so many reasons to adopt a bonded pair - they can hang out with each other while their humans are out, and they don’t need time to ‘settle’ in with pets they don’t know, which can be a consideration when adopting another pet at a later stage. Sadly, bonded pets take twice as long on average to be adopted as single pets^ 😢
Bella and Luna’s owners, Diane and Michael* got in touch with the Home2Home team after making the heartbreaking decision to find the girls a new home, as they were moving overseas. After a confidential discussion with Home2Home’s behaviour-trained support team member Susan, they worked with the team to create a beautiful write-up for their profile. The couple had even made a PowerPoint presentation with lots of adorable photos and information. It was clear that they were loved so much by the couple and it meant a lot to them to find them the perfect new home.
Bella and Luna soon received several enquiries, and one stood out. After sadly losing their dog Jessi, Sandra and Ian* were searching for a new furry addition to their family. They instantly fell in love with Bella and Luna and quickly decided that two doggos would be better than one! The couple drove eight hours from Victoria to New South Wales to meet and collect Bella and Luna.
Diane says about this day:
‘’It was a very emotional day for us all, both for our family and the adopting family. The most significant thing was when Sandra and Ian (adopting family) arrived, both Bella and Luna ran out to their car and gave them a beautiful greeting. They bonded immediately, and that made our breaking hearts ease a little. Sandra and Ian were just lovely, and it was so evident that they will provide Bella and Luna with a very loving home and a great quality of life. The interaction was a complete success!’’
The Home2Home team was so happy to receive another update from Diane a few weeks later:
‘’The adoptive family have been keeping in touch with us to let us know how the girls have been transitioning. They all seem to be getting along so well. We can not thank Home2Home enough for helping us.’’
We’re so thrilled to hear this happy ending!
Home2Home, PetRescue’s owner assistance service, helps pet owners in need find new and creative solutions which can help keep pets safe and out of a broken system. By reducing the pressure placed on rescue groups, these organisations can focus their resources on helping pets most in need - for example, those with behavioural or health issues. Backed by an experienced team, Home2Home has helped many pet owners like Diane and Michael rehome their pets and, in some cases, provide advice and information that can encourage them to work through the hurdles to find ways to be able to keep their pets.
