Did you know dogs’ paws smell like this food?
Did you know most dogs’ paws (and cats) smell like popcorn or corn chips?!
But why?
This phenomenon called “Frito feet” is caused by the natural bacteria called Proteus and Pseudomonas that are naturally found in dogs’ paw pads. It tends to give off an odour similar to yeast - which is the popcorn/corn chip smell.
This is natural and when in balance, there isn’t anything to worry about.
When do you need to be careful?
Dogs sweat through the feet and, typically, that lingering corn-chip smell can get worse if there’s any sweat trapped in the skin between their paw pads. This can be managed by trimming fur between their paw pads and give your dog a good bath with pet shampoo.
If the odour gets worse or feels like a strong lingering stench that a bath can’t fix, then it’s best to consult your veterinarian.
