BFFs found each other with an email alert
Did you know that you can get email alerts when a pet fitting your search criteria is listed on the PetRescue website? With the help of this small but powerful feature, Charlie made her way in to Shannon’s inbox, then her heart and home.
“We'd always had rescue pets when I was growing up, and I liked the idea of giving a surrendered pet another chance to live a great life,” says Shannon - a wife, mother and now proud fur-mum. “My partner and I were looking for a young, female, small-breed dog that would be fine with children. This was a specific request from our seven-year-old daughter,” she laughs.
When the decision was made by Shannon and her family to adopt a rescue dog, the excitement levels were high and the search started straight away. Shannon knew of some local rescue organisations, and began trawling their websites for their perfect pooch. After numerous enquiries, however, she started to notice that the process was becoming a bit difficult.
“Each organisation had a different way of promoting which animals were available for adoption and not all listings were up to date. A number of times we called and the animals had already been adopted,” Shannon recalls. “It felt like we were always a step behind.”
Shannon decided to give PetRescue a go and was surprised by the ease and simplicity of it all.
“On the PetRescue website, we were able to search dogs that specifically met our criteria from multiple rescue groups, shelters and pounds. We created an account and set up email alerts that met our criteria,” Shannon says.
Pet search tip:
Using the search filters on PetRescue.com.au is a great to narrow down and refine your search for the ideal pet, so you never feel too overwhelmed by all the (cute) choice that's out there.
Shannon began receiving alerts via email immediately, notifying her whenever a dog that matched her criteria was newly listed for adoption on the PetRescue website.
Before long, a cute little dog named Cherrie, from Second Chance Animal Rescue in Campbellfield, Victoria, landed in her inbox.
“The process of using PetRescue alerts was great fun and very efficient. We found our perfect match, Cherrie (now Charlie) within just one week!”
Pet search tip:
Set your alert frequency to ‘instant’ to receive an email as soon as an individual pet matching your criteria is listed. Or select ‘daily’, to receive one email each day that collates all your pet matches listed in the last 24 hours.
“We saw Charlie’s picture and she looked ideal for us. Someone had taken the time to write a little bit about Charlie's personality and she looked happy, well cared for and super cute in her photo, wearing her little pink collar with pride.”
The time, effort and love that Second Chance Animal Rescue had put in to Charlie’s profile certainly paid off. Shannon immediately sent an online enquiry, and Second Chance Rescue got in touch to arrange a meet and greet with Charlie.
"The first moment we met Charlie, she was a little anxious, but soon relaxed and was then was happy to be patted, held and played with,” Shannon says. “We were a bit nervous to begin with too. We knew we were making a significant decision to adopt her. We were unsure how she would settle in our home, but we really wanted it to work out.”
On the first night, Charlie slept happily in her new bed - a better start than Shannon could have hoped for. There were a few little challenges in the first weeks, as Charlie learned the house rules, but she was eager to please and picked them up pretty quickly.
“Charlie’s such a happy little dog, and she’s so excited to see us every morning and every time we come home. But, in particular, she loves our daughter. She’s happy to play and play, to run around, to be picked up, to sleep in her doggy bed next to wherever our daughter is sitting.
“For our daughter, who is an only child, she has become the perfect little companion. Most of all though, I think Charlie is just happy to be part of our family.”
If you’re looking for your new family member, you too can create an alert to help with your pet search. First, you need to set up an account. If you already have an account, you just need to make sure you’re signed in. Then jump to this page to set up your pet alerts.
