Home2Home is an assisted rehoming program and part of PetRescue’s owner support services.
By giving pet owners an alternative option to surrendering Home2Home prevents pets from entering the rescue system, freeing up space and resources for the most at-risk and vulnerable pets in the community.
The program supports pet owners who have the capacity to care for their pet during the adoption process by assisting them to find a new loving home for their pet. More importantly, it can help provide support to pet owners to help them keep their pets with them.
🐶 Keeping more pets safe through Home2Home
Giving pet owners the tools and support to manage the adoption process themselves offers a safe and responsible alternative to unreliable third-party platforms such as Gumtree and prevents their pet from entering the pound system.
We know the best place for at-risk and vulnerable pets is in the care of a rescue organisation. Home2Home helps to lessen the burden on rescue groups by keeping pets that don't need help out of the system, leaving more space in rescue and foster networks for pets in need.
🐾 How Home2Home can help pets:
-
A dedicated team provides full support to pet owners with rehoming their pet so that pets can transition happily from the comfort of their existing loving home straight to their new home with the least disruption.
-
Pet owners who wish to choose a new home for their pet themselves may often use platforms such as Gumtree. Home2Home offers a safe and reliable option for rehoming with a support team at hand, including animal behaviour experts who can help throughout the adoption process. We have found that sometimes, simply providing support has empowered the owner to keep their pet, which is the best outcome.
-
The PetRescue team oversees the process from owner support to adopter selection and success in the new home. Adopters are also provided with follow-ups, help and support if needed.
-
PetRescue has strict safety and security processes that keep breeders and scammers from our platform. Home2Home is a personalised service that requires consultation with our team and a detailed paperwork trail. The program does not see any payment made to the owner surrendering their pet, deterring anyone not using the service for the right reasons.
🦺 Become a Home2Home Partner
We would love for your organisation to become involved in Home2Home! Here are a few ways to be a Home2Home Partner.
Become a Safety Net Group
A Safety Net Group is an organisation that supports the pet should the adoption not work out. Since the program kicked off, Safety Net Groups are rarely required to step in but are essential to ensure all pets are safe at every stage of their adoption journey.
In the unlikely event that a rehoming is unsuccessful and the pet cannot return home, a Safety Net Group steps in by taking the pet into care. Safety Net Groups receive a donation from PetRescue for every pet adopted in their safety net 'area', regardless of whether they need to take a pet into their care or not.
Refer pet owners to Home2Home
We know that rescue organisations’ resources are often stretched. If a pet owner approaches your organisation to surrender a pet but can continue caring for them in the meantime, referring them to Home2Home can be an alternative pathway to free up space for your rescue organisation to care for the most vulnerable pets - those who don’t have a safe home to rely on, including pets in danger of being killed in pounds and those at risk in their community.
Pet owners and adopters in the program are followed up to measure the success of the program and develop it further. By challenging the status quo and testing new approaches, together, we can keep moving towards a future where every pet is safe.
It’s our hope that Home2Home will provide an alternative to surrendering and be a game-changing option for councils, shelters and rescue groups who can replicate this model or adopt parts to fit their structures. Find answers to the most frequently asked questions about how Home2Home works, here.
