A guide to adopting a pet during Covid-19 lockdown
Information about how restrictions affect pet adoption for Australian States and Territories currently in lockdown because of Covid-19.
Where there is no specific statement from your State or Territory government confirming that you can leave your home to meet or collect an adopted pet, it is recommended that you contact the rescue organisation, shelter or pound that has the pet in care. They will be able to provide information on their processes for meet and greets and the collection of your new furry friend.

New South Wales
Animal adoptions can continue under the current COVID-19 Public Health Orders.
People in an area where the stay at home rules apply are allowed to leave their home to adopt animals from pounds, shelters and rescues.
Mobile grooming services, animal shelters and animal adoptions (pounds, shelters and rescues) may continue provided service providers comply with the authorised worker restrictions. If you are adopting an animal, you should collect it from your local government area or within 5km of your home (unless it is not reasonably available locally).

Victoria
If you entered into the sale of a new pet before the lockdown began at 8pm on August 5 2021 you can travel more than 5km from home for the purposes of collecting the pet.
Individuals need to exercise common-sense judgment in the circumstances when deciding whether what they are doing would fall into that reasonable excuse for leaving home.
