About Dairy Goat Herd of 8
This family of 8 goats are so lovable. They have been at our Sanctuary since late 2022 due to owner relocation. There are four males and four females. One male is wethered and three males are intact.
Archer is a younger wether, Toggenburg x British Alpine, approx 2.3 years old. His belly is never full, even though he is overweight! He was so small when he arrived in care and it's been really satisfying seeing his health improve through good nutrition.
Matilda is an older Toggenburg, and mother to Missy, whom is also pure Toggenburg breed. Matilda's daughter MIssy has two young bucks, aged 2 years old. They are all pure Toggenburg breed and bucks are intact, ie not castrated.
Dumbledore is a large intact buck. His age is estimated at 5 years, although it is unknown. He is quite a handful to inexperienced goat owners and requires lots of time to build trust. He is a big sook once he builds trust, but still likes to be overly playful with humans by nibbling on clothing. He becomes overly protective of one carer. He was previously kept in a yard with electric fencing, even though he cannot jump any stock fence due to his size (perhaps it was to stop him mating through the fence). Consequently he dislikes being penned in a yard. He has been traumatised by a dog previously and he has a large hole in his right ear due to a previous dog attack when he was younger. Dumbledore has become much calmer since being in care, has regained energy and has gained a lot of weight. He is a much more settled and tame goat compared to what he was when he first arrived here! Dumbledore is optional for herd adoption, and we are flexible with his needs. Should any new potential adoptee decide that he is too much of a handful, we understand! He is a special older man that requires individual attention.
Goats eat lupins and field peas for protein, limited grain for energy (grain should be avoided for wethers), soaked soybean meal and chaff. They require constant access to fresh long stemmed hay and clean water. Goats are notoriously fussy when it comes to the cleanliness of their food and water.
All goats have been vaccinated and wormed.
